Herbstzeit-Wanderzeit

Hiking in Winterberg in autumn

When the leaves turn colourful and the first cool days arrive, a particularly beautiful season begins in Winterberg.
Hiking in Winterberg in autumn is an experience for all the senses: golden forests, crisp mountain air,
sweeping views and cosy breaks surrounded by nature.

Autumn is a wonderful time to discover the Sauerland, especially for hiking enthusiasts, families and active holidaymakers.

Autumnal walking trails around Winterberg

There are numerous walking trails around Winterberg to suit all abilities. Whether it’s a short family walk or a long day’s hike – there’s a route to suit everyone.

A particular highlight is the Kahle Asten. At 841 metres, it is one of the best-known mountains in the Sauerland. The high moorland around the summit offers a unique landscape in every season. In autumn, the vibrant colours and clear views create a truly special atmosphere.

Those who enjoy longer walks can set off on the Winterberg High-Altitude Trail. This certified hiking trail, around 82 kilometres long, winds through the hills around Winterberg and can be tackled in several stages. This makes it a wonderful way to combine a longer stay with a variety of hikes.

The Rothaarsteig also offers lovely opportunities for walkers. Woodlands, meadows, ridges and vantage points make the trails varied and constantly invite you to take a short break.

Hiking with the whole family

Autumn hiking doesn’t always have to be strenuous or challenging. Families can also enjoy exploring the countryside around Winterberg on foot.

There’s plenty for children to discover along the way: rustling leaves, little streams, forest animals and perhaps the odd mushroom or two. A short picnic break makes the walk an even more enjoyable family experience.

Our tip: It’s better to choose a shorter route and allow plenty of time for exploring and enjoying the scenery.

Well prepared for autumn

The weather in the Sauerland can change quickly in autumn. That’s why sturdy walking boots and weatherproof clothing are essential items to pack. The ‘layering’ principle is ideal, so you can adapt to varying temperatures whilst out and about.

You should also make sure to take drinks, a small snack and a mobile phone with you on a hike. As the days get shorter in autumn, it’s also worth setting off on longer walks early in the day.
