Key data
Length: 9.4 km
Duration: 2 hours and 10 minutes
The Kahle Asten is also known as the roof of Westphalia and, at 841.9 m above sea level, is the second-highest mountain in NRW. Discover the high heath around the Asten tower and the place where the Lenne spring originates. No matter what time of year you visit the Kahler Asten, the view over the Sauerland mountains is always a highlight - just like the fresh blueberries in summer, which you can enjoy straight from the bushes.
Routing
From our Hotel Schneider, continue up the Waltenberg until you can turn left into Fichtenweg. Follow this to the end of the road and then keep right, where a path leads you past the buildings of the German Armed Forces. Cross the Kappenrundweg which leads up to the bobsleigh run and the Kappe adventure mountain and continue to the right of the campsite . The path leads you through a wooded area until you reach a refuge . Here you take the right-hand path up to a rest area and parking lot.
From here you have two options. Choose the fast and steep path on the other side of the main road, which takes you directly to the Kahler Asten, or walk off to the left along the path behind the main road until you reach Helleplatz .
Cross the main road here and follow the little-used road through the forest in the direction of Lenneplätze.
When you leave the forest behind you, you will find a hiking and information map and a refuge on the right-hand side. From here, the two paths on the right will lead you up to the Kahler Asten.
To descend, take the hiking trail that branches off from the exit of the lower parking loop. This takes you through the forest for a while until you come to a steeper path branching off to the right in a bend, which leads you back to the main road and the parking and rest area from the outward route. From here, take the familiar route back towards Winterberg.
